Denton County Democratic Party Celebrates 100 Days

Denton County Democratic Party Chairman Neil Durrance talks about President Obama’s first 100 days in office on Wednesday night at J&J’s Pizza in Denton
A little wet but no less jubilant, Denton County Democrats gathered Wednesday at J&J’s Pizza on the Square to celebrate President Obama’s first 100 days in office.

The celebration was to take place outside the Courthouse on the Square, but a bout of afternoon showers forced the group indoors.

Also speaking were representatives of the Democratic Women of Denton, a new organization. Machelle Ashbaugh, treasurer, spoke about some of the group’s intentions and invited all women to a Lewisville kickoff event in June.

Corinth Municipal Elections 2009

On Tuesday, April 21st, local candidates gathered at Corinth City Hall for a debate style meeting hosted by Friends of the Lake Cities Library. The guest moderator was Linnie McAdams from Denton League of Women Voters. The format allowed citizens to submit questions for the candidates prior to the start of the event. This event was very well organized and facilitated.

The two mayoral candidates opened with a timed statement. The moderator presented questions from the audience and each candidate was given an equal opportunity to address that question.

After a brief break, the two City Council Candidates followed the same format.

Candidate Jim Mayfield -

The meeting was briefly interrupted after the mayoral candidates were asked about their biggest accomplishment while serving as Corinth City Council member. Paul Ruggiere explained he was most proud of bringing the local Medical Center to Corinth. At this point, an angry citizen challenged the event facilitators accusing them of screening questions. This outburst resulted in the Corinth police escorting the citizen out of the meeting. As he was being escorted out, he shouted an accusation at Paul Ruggiere suggesting Mr Ruggiere's actions benefited land developer Ben Pinnell. The citizen was video recording at the time. He posted the video on the internet here. Subsequently, another citizen wanted to know why his question about Paul Ruggiere's campaign finances and specific donors had not been asked. The meeting facilitator explained that any questions submitted must be a general topic that could be addressed by both candidates. Time would be allotted after the debate for one on one questions with candidates. He said those details were not fully explained earlier.

Candidates sparred over the city’s inability to grow its commercial sector, slumping revenues and poor communication with residents. They also acknowledged problems hiring and retaining a City Manager Read more of the Denton Record Chronicle's report here

Upcoming May Elections

In Corinth, we are facing elections in May with no Democrats running! The County Party has Project Farm Team dedicated to recruiting, grooming and campaigning for viable candidates. We need strong individuals to step up on the local level so the next time there is a municipal election, we can encourage Democratic voters to elect Democrats to our city.
The first and third Thursday of each month at 7pm, the City of Corinth holds their City Council Meetings. I encourage all of you who can to attend as many of these as possible. If we do not know what is going on in our own city on the local level, we will not have a voice in issues that affect us all. We need to educate ourselves on the issues, discuss them with each other and join in on the decisions being made.
Remember, ALL THINGS POLITICAL START ON THE LOCAL LEVEL.

The next meeting takes place on April 23rd *(not the 28th as I had origannly posted!) at 7pm for a planning meeting for the city's future direction. I encourage you all to attend! This is a special session.

CORRECTION! The next meeting is tomorrow night, the 23rd! I am sorry for the inconvenience!

A new Gallup poll has good news for President Obama: 71% of Americans have either a "great deal" or "fair amount" of confidence that Obama will do the right thing for the economy.

That number compares favorably to other major figures in government, including Fed Chair Ben Bernanke (49%), Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner (47%), Democrats in Congress (51%), and Republicans in Congress (38%).

Ask the Candidate

A Corinth Candidate Town Hall Meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at 6:30PM provided by the Friends of the Lake Cites Library organization inside of the Corinth City Hall Chamber Room (3300 Corinth Parkway; Corinth, TX 76208). The event is open to the public. The Friends organization is extremely excited that both the Corinth Mayoral Candidates and the Council Member Place 2 candidates are interested in participating in the event.

The purpose of this event is to help provide information to the community by having Corinth residents provide questions to ask candidates. A sign-in sheet will be provided inside the lobby of the Corinth City Hall building the day of the Town Hall Meeting for Corinth residents to write their name and question(s). A moderator unaffiliated with the Friends of the Lake Cities Library will select questions to ask the candidates. Depending upon the number of questions provided by the Corinth community and the response time of the candidates, the Town Hall Meeting may last as late as 9:00PM.

The public is encouraged to RSVP by email to the Friends of the Lake Cities Library if possible to attend the event so that they are able to accommodate everyone. The Friends of the Lake Cities Library ask that audience members refrain from posting or distributing any campaign material while on the property of the Corinth City Hall.

Keep Corinth Beautiful-Saturday, April 4th

Come out and help Keep Corinth Beautiful make our City a better place for all. We have several places around town that need some extra love and look for the volunteers of the Trash Off to help us out.

The event schedule this year begins with the Trash Off rally at 8:00 AM. We will all meet in front of City Hall for coffee, doughnuts and other goodies. KCB will have trash bags, gloves, etc. for all those who come out. I hope to have everyone in the field, picking up litter by 8:30 AM. I think everyone should be done by 10:00 AM, so you can get on to soccer and other Saturday things.

Keep Corinth Beautiful will also be collecting household brush and trash at the public work site on North Corinth Street from 8:30 AM until 5:00 PM on Saturday, April 4th. We will have the site open from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Sunday, April 5th as well. This collection is designed for brush and household trash too big to put out for regular collection.
